Sometimes the best trips are the ones you almost didn't take. Portland, Texas is that kind of place — a quiet coastal town on the shores of Corpus Christi and Nueces Bays that sneaks up on you in the best possible way. And here's the thing most people don't realize — you're only 12 minutes from downtown Corpus Christi and 15 minutes from the charming waterfront town of Rockport. Portland gives you the calm, the coast, and the convenience. All at once.
Here's how we'd spend 48 hours here, give or take a sunset or two. And how you might make it yours.
Start your stay at one of Portland's 12 convenient hotels. The TownePlace Suites – By Marriott and Staybridge Suites are local favorites with full kitchens, cozy rooms, and enough space to feel at home. Once you're checked in, don't bother unpacking just yet. There's a sunset waiting!
Head straight to Sunset Lake Park for golden hour. It's one of the most beautiful spots in Portland, and the light at dusk makes it even better. Pelicans, spoonbills, and egrets drift in as the light fades — and trust us, you'll want a selfie here.
Cap the evening with a movie at B&B Theatres Portland Northshore 8 or a quiet bite out. The weekend is just getting started.
Start Saturday at Portland Donut. Ham & cheese croissants, fresh donuts, iced coffee — the kind of breakfast that sets the tone for a perfect outing. Then head to Indian Point Pier. Open 24/7, the pier has been a Portland landmark since the 1950s. Bring a fishing pole or just bring yourself — redfish and trout are catch-and-keep year-round. A fishing license is required for those fishing (kids under 17 fish free). A day license runs $16 for non-residents or $11 for residents — grab one before you go at Academy Sports, H-E-B, Red Beard Gunworks, or Walmart, all right here in Portland.

Want to get out on the water? The newly opened Chris Andrews Boat Launch is just a short drive away on the southbound US-181 access road, free and open to the public, with a kayak launch and fish cleaning station. Kayak rentals are available daily from 8 a.m. to sunset and it's all self-serve through a simple app. Just scan the QR code posted on the kiosk (or download the app from signage on-site), scan your chosen vessel to unlock it, then scan the locker box QR to grab your paddles and PFD. Head out, come back, return your equipment, and end the rental in-app. Easy as that!
And if your visit falls on the first Saturday of the month, start at the Portland Farmers Market at Fifth & Elm (9 a.m.–2 p.m.). Over 70 vendors with handmade goods, locally grown products, fresh treats, and one-of-a-kind gifts.
Head to Violet Andrews Park to see one of Portland's most beloved activity: kiteboarding. This shallow, wind-swept stretch of Corpus Christi Bay is considered one of the best kite and wind spots in Texas. Never tried it? Kiteboarding.com is on-site with beginner lessons and all the gear you need! The wind does most of the work. Hungry after all that wind and water? Yo Philly Cheesesteaks makes for a perfect afternoon stop.

Take your time getting ready for dinner. Texas A1 Steaks & Seafood is a local favorite: Nueces Bay flounder battered in pecan flour, golden fried catfish, and steaks cooked exactly right. Or, if you're in the mood for something with a little more scene, head to The Grove inside Fifth & Elm. Gulf Coast Oysters, coastal fish tacos, craft cocktails like the Harbor Breeze and the Old Town Sangria. It's the kind of dinner that turns into an evening. After dinner, check the Fifth & Elm calendar. There's something happening most Saturday evenings, from live music to tribute performances like Queen!
Before you hit the road, take a slow Sunday morning to explore what makes Portland feel like Portland. Start with a coffee. Bloom City Coffee and Stage Brew at Fifth & Elm are both worth lingering at. Then some of Portland's local boutiques: The Vintage Butterfly for curated finds, City Chix Boutique for a wardrobe refresh, and My Mom Had That Antique Mall for the kind of treasure you didn't know you were looking for. Browse slowly, buy something local, and let the morning be easy.
And if you have more time, check out Corpus Christi and Rockport. The Texas State Aquarium, the USS Lexington, Rockport Beach, and the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge are all an easy drive from your Portland hotel.
