5 Very Best Ways to Enjoy the Water in Portland, TX

Posted on: July 21, 2025

Located north of Corpus Christi on the shores of Nueces and Corpus Christi Bays, Portland, Texas is the perfect spot for fans of the water. Whether it’s a day of fishing or swimming, or perhaps canoeing or kiteboarding, you’ll find a variety of relaxing, beachfront times for the whole family. Smell the sea breeze and soak in the sun as you head for adventure. The hard part will be deciding what to do first.

Kiteboarding and Windsurfing

Portland is known for kiteboarding and windsurfing, thanks to mild weather and perfect wind and water. Global fans of extreme water sports come from miles around to enjoy Portland’s beauty and vibe—and its year-round conditions. Between March and November, you won’t even need a wetsuit to hang ten on your kiteboard! New to the sport? No worries. You’ll fit right in.

A favorite place to enjoy the action is Violet Andrews Park, known for shallow water and inviting winds and waves. The 10-acre bayfront park provides quick access to the water and plenty of shoreline activities, including a beach, picnic tables, playground, and lush areas for birding.

Need a refresher kiteboarding course, or perhaps a beginner’s lesson? Portland is home to rider-owned kiteboarding.com, an outfitter that provides face-to-face instruction, equipment, and repairs. The storefront is a one-stop-shop for all things kiteboarding and a great place to take part in this lively, adventure-seeking community.

Sunset Lake Park

One of the best ways to soak up Portland’s unique ecology is to explore Sunset Lake Park. More than 333 acres, the public park offers fantastic birding, walking trails, and water recreation. Its sun-soaked beach is just right for a day of catching rays, or you can venture out in a canoe or kayak for a day of paddling. Spot beautiful waterfowl and songbirds to add to your birders’ life list, spend the day swimming, fishing or boating in the cool bay waters, or hit the nature trail to observe the wetlands and saltwater lake habitats.

A former rail line trail draws hikers, bikers, runners, and nature lovers. Comprised of both road and boardwalk, the easy-to-navigate path leads outdoor enthusiasts into serene surroundings complete with interpretative signage. Get those binoculars ready! This protected park is home to hundreds of migratory and native species.

Portland Aquatic Center

Feel like taking a dip? The Portland Aquatic Center is open year-round, offering a place to cool off in the summertime and to stay in shape in the fall and winter. The complex features plenty of shaded structures and patio furniture to enjoy a picnic and day of fun. Guests are welcome to bring outside food and drink, with the exception of glass and alcohol.

Enjoy two pools in the complex: a 25-yard, heated competition pool with diving boards and floating play structures, as well as a seasonal outdoor pool with a boat slide, dual slide, bubblers, palm tree shaders, and zero-depth entry that’s great for young children. The multi-generational attraction is a lively destination for staying healthy or keeping cool.

Bayside Park

Life’s a beach at Portland’s quaint and beautiful Bayside Park! Bring your sunscreen, picnic basket, and beach read to spend the day among sand dunes and tide pools. While there’s no swimming here, the 3.79-acre bayside park on Corpus Christi Bay features a covered shelter, picnic area, and playground. And feel free to bring Fido. Dogs are welcome at this delightful hideaway.

If you believe everything’s better on the water, then it’s time to explore beachy, bayfront fun in Portland, Texas. Take advantage of the city’s mild climate, beautiful scenery, and many places to stay. Whether you’re an extreme kiteboarder or a contemplative nature lover, you’ll be captivated by this cool, coastal gem.
