An Easy Breezy Weekend in Portland, TX

Posted on: July 21, 2025

When you need a weekend that doesn’t involve airport security or bumper-to-bumper stress, Portland, Texas is a breath of fresh, salty air. Here’s how we’d spend 48 hours in this coastal town (give or take a sunset).

Friday Evening: Check In & Slow Down

Start your stay at one of Portland’s seaside hotels like the TownePlace Suites or Staybridge Suites, where you’ll find clean rooms, a warm welcome and maybe even a Gulf view. Don’t bother unpacking—there’s a sunset waiting.

Head to Sunset Lake Park for golden hour. It’s a local favorite, with calm waters, walking trails and plenty of spots to sit and exhale. Birders: keep an eye out for herons and spoonbills gliding in for the evening.

Cap off the night at Mike Cotten’s BBQ, a laid-back spot serving brisket, ribs and sausage that locals swear by. No fuss, all flavor.

Saturday: Eat & Explore

Morning

Wake up to delicious kolaches, donuts and fresh coffee at Donut Man—the kind of breakfast place where every doughy bite tastes homemade. Then head over to Indian Point Pier. Bring your fishing pole or just enjoy the breeze.

Afternoon

Hungry? Then head to Yo Philly Cheesesteaks & Subs for lunch, where the sandwiches are authentic and the stories on the wall are too. The wall of photos is filled with snapshots from regulars, Philly natives and folks passing through—each one with a little personality and a big appetite.

Spend your afternoon in Violet Andrews Park, where kids can play and grown-ups can relax with a book or a view of the water. If you're the active type, walk or bike along the Nature Preserve trails. It’s also one of the top spots in Texas for kiteboarding and windsurfing, thanks to steady wind and shallow bay waters. If you're new to the sport, Kiteboarding.com offers local lessons, rentals, and everything you need to catch some wind.

Evening

If you’re in town during spring or fall, check the schedule at the Portland Community Calendar—you might catch a movie night on the lawn, a seasonal festival or a local market that brings everyone out. It’s a great way to get a feel for the town—no planning required.

Visit Texas A1 Steaks & Seafood for dinner. The shrimp tacos hit the spot after a long day in the sun.

Sunday: Shop Small Before You Go

Spend your last morning exploring some of Portland’s local shops—especially around the area of the Leisure Entertainment District. You’ll find everything from handmade goods and home décor to beachy gifts and Texas-style flair. It’s the perfect way to wind down your trip. Grab a coffee, browse a few boutiques, and take home something that reminds you of your time here.
