From resale furniture and antique galleries to a used bookstore, there’s a little bit of everything here that makes for great second hand treasure. My Mom Had That! and The Vintage Butterfly hold more than 100 vendor booths between them, so no two trips turn up the same finds.
Whether you’re a dedicated thrifter, an antique hunter, or just someone who can’t walk past a good deal, here’s where we’d start. Every stop is less than a mile from the next!
The name says it all. My Mom Had That! is a thrift shop built around the joy of walking down memory lane. The kind of place where you pick something up and immediately know exactly where it should live in your home. Glassware, home décor, candles, vintage toys, and a whole lot you won't see coming. It’s full of vendor booths so not one thing is the same, and every booth is a different taste and some of the vendors theme their booths for upcoming holidays!
The newest addition to Portland's thrifting lineup, The Vintage Butterfly opened in late November 2025 and is the shop to know if you're looking for something more than a typical thrift experience. Every piece is carefully cleaned, refurbished when needed, and merchandised with a real eye for quality. Upscale resale furniture, antiques, and décor that are genuinely irresistible. This is the kind of store that turns a browse into a buy. Multiple times. They also rent space to vendors, so the mix keeps changing and no two visits look quite the same.
The antique furniture here isn't just staging — it's inventory! Nearly everything in the shop is displayed on antiques that are for sale themselves. Beyond the antique furniture, there's a great gift and jewelry selection worth checking out on your thrifting adventure, plus some of the best candles and home décor around.
You'll find it off the Hwy 181 frontage road, just past Whataburger.
For classic thrift shopping, Goodwill delivers the familiar experience with a Portland-sized inventory. A great stop for clothing, housewares, and random finds that you can't predict until you're in the aisle looking at them. Goodwill South Texas puts the revenue from donated goods toward free job training and employment services for people facing barriers to work, so the sweater you buy and the boxes you drop off both do something.
Books INK is a neighborhood used bookstore that has become a genuine community hub in Portland. Secondhand books are thrifting too, and this is the good stuff. A gently used selection, local author signings, book discussion groups, and weekly events including Scrabble Club on Thursday evenings from 7 to 9 p.m. It's the kind of place that reminds you what a neighborhood bookstore can be.
Portland's garage sale scene is a treasure hunter's dream. Every sale in town is permitted through the City, which means they all land on one interactive map — addresses, dates, and details, with the new weekly list posted every Friday. Most sales run Friday through Sunday, so the map goes live right when you need it. Get out early though! Sales open around 7 or 8 a.m., and weekend mornings pull the most listings and the most buyers. Since most of the shops don’t open until 10, you can work a full morning of driveways before the first storefront unlocks.

Start at My Mom Had That! and The Vintage Butterfly. They sit right next door to each other on US-181 and keep the same 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. hours (most days), so that’s two stops before you’ve moved your car. From there it’s a short hop over to Attic Antiques on Railroad Ave, then north to Goodwill on Wildcat Drive. Loop back down to Books INK on the US-181 frontage road and you finish right about where you started, no backtracking and no crossing your own path. The whole circuit runs about a mile and a half, start to finish. Set aside some time though. Most people spend a solid 30 to 45 minutes in each shop once they start digging, so five stops plus lunch fills an afternoon comfortably!
And since you’re already here, work in the rest. Breakfast tacos and coffee at The Texan on US-181, or coffee at Bloom City Coffee Co. right by Books INK. Come lunch, Sabor Maya on Lang Road is the local Mexican spot, and Poseidon on US-181 does sushi and hibachi if you’d rather sit a while. Then end your treasure hunt at Fifth & Elm, 201 5th St., where the on-site restaurant, The Grove, handles delicious appetizers. And why not celebrate your finds with a cold margarita!
